How To Activate, Jailbrake And Unlock Your iPhone using Pwnage 2.0.2
So you have decided to update your iPhone to 2.0.1, but not sure if it is safe? Let me be straight forward with you, it is safe, especially if you own 1st generation iPhone. Thanks to iPhone Dev Team you will be running 2.0 OS on your iPhone in no time. However, there are few things to consider both negative and positive before updating.
• No ‘Installer.app’ – For those of you who just cannot live without specific software application from ‘Installer’ this is a bad news. Hopefully this can be fixed later. There is an alternative to ‘Installer’ however – ‘Cydia’. Personally I like ‘Cydia’ for its simplicity and look a lot. It doesn’t have all of the applications ‘Installer’ has, but eventually it will, or so do I think.
• Backup/Restore is Not Recommended –Usually when you are restoring/updating your iPhone, iTunes will ask you if you want to back up your phone first. If you choose yes, then after your iPhone is updated to 2.0 iTunes will restore back the content like contacts, music, calendar, to your newly updated gadget. It sounds more convenient, doesn’t it? It sure does, but not recommended. Here is the reason. A lot of iPhone users who had their phone unlocked and activated before they updated to 2.0, reported their phones being ‘slow’ to respond when trying to open applications after the update. The simple truth is that a lot of ‘unauthorized’ third party applications are being restored together with contacts, calendar, etc; those apps are useless after the update, plus they clutter your phone. This is the reason why I recommend updating your phone without restoring it. In any case you can sync you information with your computer again.
Now I am feeling like giving you some good news.
• T-Mobile users, who have t-zones plan for $5.99 configured to work as a data plan, will have same opportunity after 2.0 update. It is simple; in fact you can install ‘the hack’ from Cydia. You also might need to restart your iPhone, but that’s about it (talking from personal experience).
• Pandora Radio… You probably think what in the heck is Pandora Radio? Well, it’s a free radio station for your iPhone. It is available through Apple App Store. What makes it ‘the different’ kind of a radio station is your ability customize it to play the songs you never heard but would like to hear . You simply enter the name of your favorite song or artist in the search field and Pandora will play songs that are similar in style and genre. It works amazing. (I would update to 2.0 if this Pandorawas the only new addition to the 2.0 release).
• Another thing to consider is Apple App Store. Even though most of the applications are for sale, there are few useful ones that are distributed for free. You can check them out using iTunes. What is really good about App Store is the peace of mind it gives you, assuring the quality, quality enforced by Apple.
Ok, enough of that. Here are simple steps for updating your 1st generation iPhone or iPhone 3G.
Here is what you need:
• download and install Pwnage Tool 2.0.1 or later
• download bootloaders
• update to iTunes 7.7 (using Apple Software Update)
• download iPhone Restore Firmware 2.0
Assuming you got everything you need, let get to work. (If you really can’t find what you need, maybe I will be able to help you to find it… contact me)
1. Start Pwnage Tool
2. By default Pwnage will change Apple logo you see when you turn on your iPhone to Pineapple. If you don’t want that, choose ‘Expert Mode’. Later, you will have an opportunity to uncheck the Pineapple logo install.
3. Select your iPhone model and click on blue arrow
4. Click on Browse for IPSW and click on blue arrow
5. Navigate to iPhone Restore 2.0.1 you have downloaded earlier and select it, click on blue arrow again
6. After you see this picture, don’t change anything except click on Cydia
7. Inside the Cydia packages menu choose Cydia Installer and Cydia source set for download and later install.
8. Select the downloaded packages and click on blue arrow
9. Here you have a choice to leave all original apple logos or get custom ones from iPhone Dev Team
10. Click on ‘Build’ and blue arrow button
11. Choose ‘No’ to search on the website for bootloader 3.9
12. Choose ‘Yes’ and navigate to bootloader 3.9
13. Choose ‘No’ to search on the website for bootloader 4.6
14. Choose ‘Yes’ and navigate to bootloader 4.6
15. Navigate to the place you want Pwnage to save the custom IPSW and click on ‘Save’
16. Pwnage is working…
17. At this prompt enter your password (if you are on the Mac)
18. This is what you want to see
Now, after you see this screen:
Connect your iPhone to your Mac/PC and enter into DFU mode (The Pwnage too will walk you through, don’t worry its easy). After you have successfully entered DFU mode, open your iTunes. It will detect your phone in DFU mode and give you an option to ‘Restore’ you phone. NOTE: If you just click on restore, iTunes will restore your device to original factory settings, that way your iPhone will be still locked. However if you hold your ‘Option’ key on the Mac (Alt on pc) and click on ‘Restore’, iTunes will give you a chance to navigate to your custom restore file. Select it and let the ‘software do its work’
Ok, you are done. Now you have your phone unlocked, jailbroken and updated to 2.0.1. Enjoy!
